Koromogawa [Village] - Koromogawa

Japanese: 衣川[村] - ころもがわ

A village in Isawa County in the southwest of Iwate Prefecture. Population 5,518 (1995). It borders Hiraizumi Town and Ichinoseki City to the south, and the mountainous region on the eastern edge of the Ou Mountains spreads out to the west. The Kitamata River flows east in the north and the Minamimata River flows east in the south, and they join in the east to form the Koromo River. In 789 (Enryaku 8), the Koromo River Fortress was built nearby, and it was the site of battles during the Zenkunen War and Gosannen War, and historical sites related to the Abe and Fujiwara clans remain. Agriculture is the main industry, with rice and livestock farming, and in recent years cucumbers, strawberries, and other crops being cultivated. Before World War II, it was a breeding center for military horses.

岩手県南西部，胆沢（いさわ）郡の村。人口5518(1995)。南は平泉町，一関市に接し，西部は奥羽山脈東縁の山地が広がる。北部を北股川，南部を南股川が東流し，東部で合流して衣川となる。789年(延暦8)衣川柵が付近に設けられ，前九年の役，後三年の役の戦場となり，安倍･藤原両氏にまつわる史跡が残る。農業が主産業で，米作，畜産が行われ，近年はキュウリ，イチゴなどの栽培も盛ん。第2次大戦前は軍用馬の産地であった。
