Congreve, William
Born January 24, 1670, near Leeds, Yorkshire
[Died] January 19, 1729, London English playwright. A representative author of comedies of manners. After studying in Dublin, he went to London to become a law student, but then decided to pursue a literary career. His first play, The Old Bachelor (1693), was well received, and he established his reputation with The Double Dealer (94) and Love for Love (95). His last play, The Way of the World (1700), was unpopular when it was published, but is now recognized as one of the greatest comedies of manners. His distinctive feature was his portrayal of human beings through witty and exquisite dialogue. He also wrote tragedies, novels, and poems. In his later years, he lived a leisurely and comfortable life as a socialite.
