Hans Memling

Hans Memling

Flemish painter. Born in Seligenstadt, Germany, he died in Bruges. He is said to have settled there after 1465. He is believed to have been influenced by the Cologne School in his early years, but later he followed the style of 15th century Flemish painters, especially Weiden, Bouts, and Goos, and synthesized them without adding any new elements. He had a great sense of harmony and order, and although he lacked dramatic tension or sharp characterization, he created paintings full of spirituality and poetry with warm colors and perfected technique. Many of his works are portraits, but he created a new idea of placing fragments of landscapes in the background, which is thought to be due to the influence of Italian painting. His representative works include the altarpiece "Last Judgment" in the Church of Our Lady in Gdańsk, "Mystical Marriage of St. Catherine" and "Reliquary of St. Ursula" in the Memling Museum in the Hospital of St. John in Bruges, and "Statue of St. Benedict" in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
