A court poet in the mid-Heian period. One of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. A son of Yoriki and father of Sukechika. He became the chief priest and deputy chief priest of Shinto. In 951 (Tenryaku 5), at the age of 31, he was chosen as one of the five Nashitsubo poets and participated in the compilation of the readings of the Manyoshu and the Gosenshu. He composed poems for such events as the "Palace Poetry Contest of the Fourth Year of the Reign of Tentoku" (960), the "Go Poetry Contest of En'yuin and Princess Shishi," the "Left Minister Yoritada's Senzai Contest," the "Palace Poetry Contest of the Second Year of the Kanwa Era," and the "Empress Dowager Senshi's Nadeshiko Contest." He also submitted poems for the Daijoe ceremony held by Emperors Reizei and En'yu, and was twice summoned to compose his own "family collections" by Emperors En'yu and Kazan. He responded to requests from such influential families as Saneyori, Kanemichi, and Kaneie, and was a poet who specialized in folding screen poems and ceremonial poems, rivaling Kiyohara Motosuke. However, the story in "Fukuro-soshi" where he was scolded by his father Yoriki for boasting about the quality of the poems of Prince Atsumi's son Nenohi (in the family of Prince Atsumi), symbolizes the strictness of the Onakatomi family's tradition of passing on the art of waka poetry. 124 of his poems were included in imperial anthologies such as "Shuishū". [Goto Shoko] Even the pines that are cut off from the tip of the tree are drawn to you from today onwards, and all ages will pass. "Yamaguchi Hiroshi, 'Study of the Imperial Poetry Circle: Murakami, Reizei, and En'yucho' (1967, Ohfusha)" ▽ "Hosaka Miyako, 'Poets of the Onakatomi Clan' (1972, Musashino Shoin)" <Upper verse> The fires lit by the guards of the fence burn in the night <Lower verse> As the day fades, one must think of something else.
