A city on the Kalamazoo River in southwest Michigan, USA. Population 77,145 (2000). A key transportation location with railroads, highways, and an airport, it is an important distribution and trading center for celery, mint, corn, bulbs such as tulips and gladioli, and fruits such as grapes, all grown in the fertile Kalamazoo Valley. Industry has also developed significantly, with pharmaceutical, stove, and clothing manufacturing and paper manufacturing thriving. There are many cultural and educational facilities, and the city boasts an excellent library system centered around Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College.
