A city on the Kalamazoo River in southwest Michigan, USA. Population 77,145 (2000). A key transportation location with railroads, highways, and an airport, it is an important distribution and trading center for celery, mint, corn, bulbs such as tulips and gladioli, and fruits such as grapes, all grown in the fertile Kalamazoo Valley. Industry has also developed significantly, with pharmaceutical, stove, and clothing manufacturing and paper manufacturing thriving. There are many cultural and educational facilities, and the city boasts an excellent library system centered around Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College.

アメリカ合衆国、ミシガン州南西部カラマズー川に臨む都市。人口7万7145(2000)。鉄道、ハイウェー、空港と交通の要地であり、肥沃(ひよく)なカラマズー谷で栽培されるセロリ、ハッカ、トウモロコシやチューリップ、グラジオラスなどの球根、ブドウなどの果物の集散・交易地として重要である。工業の発達も著しく、薬品、ストーブ、衣料品などの製造工業や製紙業が盛ん。文化・教育施設が多く、とくにウェスタン・ミシガン大学、カラマズー大学などを中枢とした優れた図書館システムを誇っている。
