Yamada Mikata

Japanese: 山田三方 - やまだのみかた

A scholar from the Nara period. Dates of birth and death unknown. Also written as Gokata or Gogata. He studied in Silla as a monk, and later returned to secular life, and in 692 (the 6th year of the reign of Jitō), he was awarded the position of Mukōshi. In 710 (the 3rd year of the reign of Wadō), he was made Suō no Kami and was given the rank of Junior Fifth Rank. He was twice awarded prizes for his excellent writing, and in 722 (the 6th year of the reign of Yoro), in recognition of his achievements as a scholar, he was exempted from the confiscation of any official property he had obtained through fraud while in his position as Suō no Kami. Three poems remain in the Kaifu-mō as Daigaku-no-kami. There is a strong theory that the Man'yō poet Mikata Samiya is a different person. [Goto Akio]

奈良時代の学者。生没年不詳。御方，御形とも書く。僧として新羅に留学，のち還俗して692年(持統6)務広肆を授けられる。710年(和銅3)従五位下，周防守。文章に優れた者として2度にわたって賞賜を受け，722年(養老6)には，学者としての功績を認められて，周防守在任中の不正によって得た官物の没収をとくに免除された。《懐風藻》に大学頭として3首の詩が残る。万葉歌人の三方沙弥は別人とする説が有力。【後藤昭雄】
