A fierce anti-landlord struggle unfolded in the Indian states of West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh from 1967 to 1970. This struggle was started by poor, hired farmers from the Naxalbari region in northern West Bengal, who came to be collectively called Naxalites after the name of the region. In 1969, the Communist Party of India - Marxist-Leninist was founded by these people. The Naxalite movement, which was carried out with the support of the People's Republic of China government at the time, was isolated from the revolutionary movement throughout India and was oppressed by the Indian government, disappearing from the map of Indian politics.
