Micrometer - Micrometer (English spelling)

It is a dimensional measuring instrument that utilizes the fact that the feed amount of a precisely machined screw is proportional to the rotation angle of the screw. There are several dozen types of micrometers in widespread use today, which can be categorized by application into those for measuring external dimensions, internal dimensions, depth, and individual machine element measurements such as screw diameter and gear tooth thickness. Special applications include measuring the thickness of steel plates, synthetic resins, rubber, paper, etc., measuring the wall thickness of cylindrical workpieces, and measuring spline groove diameters. In addition to the above, a wide variety of micrometers are commercially available, including those with reduced measuring pressure for measuring workpieces that are prone to elastic deformation.

In terms of accuracy, it is possible to make measurements one order of magnitude more accurate than a caliper, and generally it is possible to read to within 0.001 millimeters (1 micrometer). For measuring external diameters, the measuring range is limited, but some models can measure up to 1000 millimeters. Like calipers, some models come with a dial gauge to make reading easier, and some have a digital display. Some models also have an output terminal for measurement data, and can be connected to a microcomputer to statistically process the measurement data, making it possible to configure advanced measurement systems and process control systems.

Micrometers are those that directly measure absolute dimensions as described above, but there are also air micrometers and electric micrometers that measure dimensions by comparing them with a standard gauge.

精密に加工されたねじの送り量を基準に、その量がねじの回転角に比例することを利用した、寸法測定器である。現在普及しているマイクロメーターは、数十種類に及んでおり、これらを用途別に分類すると、外側寸法測定用、内側寸法測定用、深さ測定用、ねじ径や歯車の歯厚測定などの個別機械要素測定用に分けられる。また特殊な用途としては、鋼板、合成樹脂、ゴム、紙などの厚さ測定用、円筒工作物の肉厚測定用、スプラインの溝径測定用などがあげられる。これらに加えて、弾性変形しやすい工作物測定のために測定圧を小さくしたものなど、多種多様なマイクロメーターが製品化されている。

　精度的には、ノギスより1桁(けた)高精度な測定が可能で、一般的には、0.001ミリメートル（1マイクロメートル）の読み取りが可能である。外径測定用では、測定範囲は限られるが、最大1000ミリメートルまで測定可能なものもある。ノギスと同様、読み取りを容易にするため、ダイヤルゲージ付きのものや、デジタル表示が可能なものも存在している。また、測定データの出力端子を備え、マイクロコンピュータと接続し、測定データを統計的に処理することにより、高度な計測システムや工程管理システムを構成できるようになっているものもある。

　マイクロメーターといえば、以上のような絶対寸法を直接測定するものをさすが、標準ゲージとの比較測定方式により寸法測定を行うマイクロメーターとして、空気マイクロメーター、電気マイクロメーターなどが存在している。
