Aubanel, Théodore
Born: March 26, 1829, Avignon
[Died] October 31, 1886. A French poet. He wrote lyric poems and plays in Provencal, an old dialect of southern France. Out of his love for his hometown, he founded the literary society Félibrige (1854) with poets F. Mistral and Lemagne, whose aim was to preserve and revive southern French dialects such as Provencal. However, when the society later became a political organization, he left in order to protect the purity of literature. He is also well known for his friendship with the Symbolist poet Mallarmé. His major works include La Miougrano entreduberto (60), Lou pan dou pecat (82), and Li Filio d'Avignoun (85).
