Julius Cohnheim (1839-84) observed the process of inflammation under a microscope using the mesentery of a frog, and described how at the beginning of inflammation, blood vessels dilate, followed by a change in blood flow, and then white blood cells and serum seep out of the blood vessels (called exudation), thus sparking experimental research into inflammation.
