…In 1793, J. Hunter (a Scottish surgeon) introduced the idea that inflammation is not a disease, but a reaction (a biological defense reaction) that produces beneficial effects in the individual. Julius Cohnheim (1839-84) observed the process of inflammation under a microscope using the mesentery of a frog, and described how at the beginning of inflammation, blood vessels dilate, followed by a change in blood flow, and then white blood cells and serum seep out of the blood vessels (called exudation), thus sparking experimental research into inflammation. This observation was an important finding that is still confirmed today. …
