...A perennial plant of the family Violaceae that produces beautiful lily-colored flowers (illustration). It grows wild from central Honshu north to Hokkaido in slightly damp places in deciduous forests. It flowers from May to June. The stem is 20-40 cm tall and has many hairs. The leaves are alternate, broadly lanceolate, entire, and the few leaves at the bottom of the stem are particularly large, measuring 6-12 cm in length and 2-4 cm in width. The inflorescence is terminal and bifurcated at the base. The flowers are arranged in a snail-like shape, blooming from the bottom up. The corolla is 1-1.5 cm in diameter. The perianth forms a short flower tube at the base, which is divided into five pieces at the top and opens flat. ...
