A former town in Nakakoma County, western Yamanashi Prefecture. It is located in the western part of the Kofu Basin, on the alluvial fan of the Midai River, a tributary of the Kamanashi River. Cotton cultivation and sericulture were once popular here, but fruit cultivation was introduced at the end of the Meiji period, and the area is now rich in peaches and other fruits. It has long been known for its peddlers. In April 2003, it merged with Hatta Village, Ashiyasu Village, Wakakusa Town, Kushigata Town, and Kosei Town to form Minami-Alps City. 39.14 km2 . 山梨県西部,中巨摩(なかこま)郡の旧町。甲府盆地西部,釜無(かまなし)川の支流御勅使(みだい)川の扇状地にある。かつてワタの栽培,養蚕が盛んであったが,明治末以降果樹栽培を導入,モモなどを多産する果樹地帯をなす。古くから行商で知られる。2003年4月,八田村,芦安村,若草町,櫛形町,甲西町と合併して南アルプス市となる。39.14km2。1万9247人(2000)。
