Oto [Village] - Ooto

Japanese: 大塔[村] - おおとう
Oto [Village] - Ooto
A village in Yoshino County, southern Nara Prefecture. Population 871 (1995). Located in a steep mountainous region west of the Omine Mountains, which are part of the Yoshino mountain range, the village is south-flowing with the Totsu River, a part of the Kumano River system. The area has deep ties to the Southern Court, and the village was named after Ootanomiya when the four villages of Funakawa-go and the fourteen villages of Junimura-go merged in 1889. Almost the entire area is covered in forests of cedar and cypress, and was one of the hidden areas of Oku-Yoshino, but the construction of National Route 168 along the Totsu River has made transportation more convenient. Forestry is the main industry, and the forest product has shifted from barrel logs to polished logs in recent years.

Ooto [Ooto village]

A village in Nishimuro County, southern Wakayama Prefecture. Population 3,285 (1995). Located in the mountainous area on the western foot of Mt. Ooto (1,122m), the highest peak in the Kiinan region, the village is a typical mountain village with meandering Tonda River and Hiki River, with settlements scattered at the bottom of the valley. As the entire area is mountainous and transportation is inconvenient, there is a high influx of population. Transportation has been improved, with National Route 311 running along the Tonda River at the western end and Route 371 running along the Hiki River in the center. Most of the village area is forest, and forestry is the main industry. The Hiki River area is home to the Hyakumanyama Valley, the village-run Kamoshika Ranch, and the Youth Travel Village, and is designated as the Ooto Hiki River Prefectural Natural Park.
