Emperor Ichijo

Japanese:
Emperor Ichijo
Year of death: 22 June 1011 (25 July 1011)
Year of birth: Tengen 3.6.1 (980.7.15)
Emperor in the mid-Heian period. His name was Kanenori. He was the first son of Emperor En'yu, and his mother was Fujiwara no Kaneie's daughter, Empress Senshi (Tosanjo-in). His 25 years on the throne was the second longest in the Heian period after Emperor Daigo. He became the crown prince of his cousin Emperor Kazan at the age of five, and ascended to the throne two years later, with his maternal grandfather Kaneie as regent. Kaneie's successors Michitaka and Michikane became regents, but both died within a short time, and Michinaga rose to power with the support of his sister Senshi (it is said that she even entered the palace at night to plead with the reluctant emperor in tears). In 1000, Michitaka's daughter Sadashi was the empress, and Michinaga made her empress, and then added his daughter Shoshi as empress, creating the unprecedented situation of one emperor and two empresses. Shoshi gave birth to Emperors Go-Ichijo and Go-Suzaku. It is said that Emperor Ichijo cooperated with Michinaga in politics, but Michinaga's sole authority was remarkable when it came to the appointment of new officials. The emperor himself was of a gentle and elegant nature, highly intelligent and an accomplished flute player, which reflected the fact that Ichijo produced many talented people in all walks of life, including writers, aristocrats, monks and samurai. It was also during the Ichijo era that talented women such as Sei Shonagon and Murasaki Shikibu, who served Sadashi and Shoshi, emerged and brought about the blossoming of court literature. He fell ill and abdicated in 1011 to Emperor Sanjo. His tomb is the Kitaryou of Enyu-ji Temple, Shuzan, Ryoan-ji Temple, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City. The existence of a diary written during the Kanko era, "Ichijo Tenno Shinki," is known, but the contents have not been passed down. <References> Kano Shigefumi, "Emperor Ichijo" (Women's University Japanese Literature, no. 104)
