...It is also customary to rub beans on the body before throwing them away, which is thought to be a way to ward off evil. Yakikagashi are roasted sardine heads or other strong-smelling objects that are attached to bean branches or holly with sharp leaves and hung at the entrances of houses. They are called demon's eyes and demon's fear, and are also considered a way to ward off evil spirits. Bean divination and chants to silence insects when roasting the yakikagashi were also widely practiced in the past.
