An insect of the Hemiptera family, family Bucconidae (illustration). This aquatic stink bug lives in ponds and swamps, but has thrived in the favorable environment of rice paddies, and was probably given this name because it is common in all rice paddies. This species is the largest aquatic stink bug, so in America it is called the giant water bug (it does not exist in Europe). It can take down frogs and fish with one blow, and also prey on other aquatic insects. It has a dark brown body length of 50 to 65 mm, and is somewhat long and oval in shape. It is somewhat similar to the water bug, but its body is wider and it has a pair of short, retractable breathing valves instead of a long breathing tube.
