...a tool for toasting bread. In Europe and the US, electric toasting began to be used around 1900, replacing the rack-type toasting machine that was placed on top of a stove. The first toasting machines were imported from Germany in 1921 to Japan, and domestic production began in 1930. The early toasting machines had bread placed on either side of a central heating element, and toasted each side at a time; they were called turnover toasting machines. They were easy to operate and were highly valued for being able to toast mochi (rice cakes), but required the effort of turning the bread over. In the US, pop-up and walking toasting machines had already been manufactured since 1926, but domestic production began in 1955. ...
