Holbrook, J.

The name comes from the Lyceum, a school opened by Aristotle on the outskirts of Athens. In 1826, educator Josiah Holbrook (1788-1854) started the Lyceum in Millbury, Massachusetts, with the aim of educating the working and artisan classes in science and useful general knowledge. The movement expanded, and in 1831 a national organization, the American Lyceum, was established. By 1834, there were about 3,000 Lyceums nationwide.
