Western-style painter and calligrapher. Born in Edo on July 10, 1866. His real name was Sakutaro. He moved to his father's hometown of Nagano Prefecture at a young age, where he developed an interest in painting and learned the basics of Nanga and Western-style painting. In 1887 (Meiji 20), he moved to Tokyo and studied under Koyama Shotaro at the Juichikai Institute (later Fudosha). In 1900, he exhibited at the Paris World Exposition and won an award, the following year he traveled to France to study under Collin and then Laurens, and in 1905 he returned to Japan and became a member of the Pacific Art Association. In 1907, he was a judge at the Tokyo Industrial Exposition and the first Bunten exhibition. In 1914 (Taisho 8), he became a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1934 (Showa 9), he became the principal of Pacific Art School. He was also known for his calligraphy, and in 1901, he opened a calligraphy museum in Negishi, Tokyo, based on his collection. He died on June 6, 1943. He specialized in historical paintings, and his representative works include "Deceiving the Lanting Pavilion" and "The Dream of Lu Sheng (Kantan)." 洋画家、書家。慶応(けいおう)2年7月10日江戸に生まれる。本名鈼太郎(さくたろう)。幼時に父の郷里長野県に移るが絵をよくし、南画と洋画の初歩を学ぶ。1887年(明治20)上京して十一会研究所(のち不同舎)で小山正太郎(こやましょうたろう)に師事する。1900年パリ万国博覧会に出品して受賞、翌年渡仏してコラン、ついでローランスに学び、05年帰国して太平洋画会会員となる。07年東京府勧業博覧会ならびに第1回文展の審査員。19年(大正8)帝国美術院会員、34年(昭和9)太平洋美術学校校長となる。書でも知られ、その収集品をもとに36年、東京根岸(ねぎし)に書道博物館を開設した。昭和18年6月6日没。歴史画を得意とし、代表作に『賺蘭亭図(らんていをあざむくのず)』『盧生(ろせい)の夢(邯鄲(かんたん))』などがある。 [小倉忠夫] 『中村不折著『学書三訣』(1970・西東書房)』 出典 小学館 日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)について 情報 | 凡例 |
