An American family of actors. Born to British actor Maurice Barrymore (1847-1905) and American actress Georgiana Emma Drew (1856-93), they had three children who were particularly well-known in the United States. The eldest son, Lionel Barrymore (1878-1954), appeared on stage as a boy and became a popular actor, but gradually began to concentrate on film work, and continued to do so from 1925 onwards.
