Yasushi Wada

Japanese:
Yasushi Wada
Born: Tenmei 7 (1787)
[Died] Tempo 11 (1840)
A mathematician who ushered in the heyday of Japanese mathematics during the Bunka and Bunsei eras. Commonly known as Toyonoshin, his pen name was Shiei, and his pen names included Sangaku, Ensho, and Hotsu. He became a student of Kusaka Makoto, and together with fellow student Uchida Gokan, he completed the sixth transmission of the Seki school. He is considered the second greatest mathematician of the Edo period after Seki Takakazu, and is the perfector of the art of enri katsujutsu (the art of the circle). Wada started by discussing the basics of the circle, expanded the scope of application of Ajima Naoen's double integral method, and created various tables related to the circle. Since the circle theory of Japanese mathematics mainly uses series, there was a need for tables related to the development of the art of the circle theory using infinite series. He wrote many books on integer theory, but his books and tables on the circle theory of series include the following: Rokuyo sanpo (Six-contract arithmetic), Da-hyo zensho (Complete collection of tables), Shosa henkyu sanpo (Sample of calculations of differences and differences in the analysis of the circle theory), Enri sho kan (First volume of tables of the circle theory), Junsei henpo hyo ho (Table of the rate of succession and the table of the eight states of the rate of succession), etc. It is said that he had 170 students.
