Otsu Road

Japanese: 大津道 - おおつみち

An ancient road running east to west across the Kawachi Plain. It appears in the description of the Jinshin War in the Nihon Shoki. The modern Nagao Kaido, which follows this road, started at Oshoji in Sakai, went straight east to Nagao in Katsuragi City near Taima-dera Temple. The ancient Otsu Road is thought to have been a road leading to Otomo no Mitsu, which is assumed to be near the Aguchi Shrine (present-day Sakai City), a shrine listed in the Engishiki, and was a straight road stretching about 14.5 km.

河内(かわち)平野を東西に走る古道。《日本書紀》の壬申の乱の記述中にみえる。この道を踏襲する近世の長尾(ながお)街道は，堺の大小路(おおしょうじ)を基点に，東へ直進し当麻(たいま)寺付近の葛城市長尾に至った。古代の大津道は式内社の開口(あぐち)神社（現堺市）付近に想定される〈大伴(おおとも)の御津(みつ)〉へ至る道であったと思われ，約14.5kmに及ぶ直線道であった。
