1899‐1986 Mathematician born in Kobrin, Belarus. While studying mathematics at the University of Rome, his hometown was incorporated into Poland, and in 1939 it was incorporated into the Soviet Union. He moved to the United States in 1927, became a naturalized citizen in 1936, and taught at Johns Hopkins University until 1945. He spent most of his time thereafter at Harvard University. He retired in 1969, but spent a long time there after retirement for research. His field of research is algebraic geometry, and he is known for constructing new theories using commutative algebra theory, achieving various results in the theory of algebraic surfaces, establishing the theory of rational correspondences in general dimensions, and proving the existence of projective varieties that have the same rational function field as a given three-dimensional algebraic variety and have no singular points.
