Poet. His early pen name was Yoshikawa Soichiro. Born November 3, 1887 (December 3 according to his family register) in Gunma Prefecture. Lost both parents at a young age and grew up under the care of his grandfather Manpei, the pioneer of Isobe Onsen. Graduated from the English department of Waseda University. Worked in the advertising department of Lion Toothpaste. Born with a strong sense of shame, he had a tendency to be lonely, partly due to hearing loss in his left ear since middle school. He remained single until the age of 46. He was recognized by Kitahara Hakushu and published poems in such magazines as "Zamboa," "Chijyujunrei," and "ARS." He was called one of the "three ravens under Hakushu's banner" along with Hagiwara Sakutaro and Muro Saisei, but he had few friends in the poetry world and his poems were extremely introspective, indulging in mysterious and fantastical beauty. He was familiar with Japanese classics and was deeply influenced by French symbolist poetry from an early age, and his perfected colloquial poetry is rich in musical beauty and had a strong influence on Sakutaro. Along with Mitomi Kuchiha, it can be said that he was the originator of the new symbolist poetry in Japan. He also translated many excellent poems by Baudelaire and others. He died of pulmonary tuberculosis on April 18, 1934. After his death, his poetry collections "The Indigo Toad" (1936), "The Snake's Bride" (1940), and others were published.
