A deciduous shrub of the Araliaceae family (APG classification: Araliaceae). The trunk is yellowish brown, almost unbranched, erect, and densely covered with slender spines. The leaves are large and round, 20-30 cm in diameter, palmately divided into 7-9 lobes, and densely covered with slender spines along the veins. The petiole is 7-20 cm long. In June and July, pale yellow-green flowers bloom in large panicles that emerge from the ends of the branches. The drupes are obovate, 6-7 mm long, and ripen red. They are found in Hokkaido, Honshu (northern from the Chubu region and in the Kii Mountains), and Shikoku, and grow in coniferous forests. The name comes from the fact that the leaves resemble butterbur and have spines. The genus Aralia consists of three species, with one species each found in the Korean peninsula and northern North America in addition to Aralia.
