Ukiyo-zoshi. Five volumes. Forty-four chapters. Written by Ihara Saikaku. Published in 1689 ( Genroku 2 ). The title is a counterpoint to the Chinese Song Dynasty's "Touin Hijito," but with the "Tou" tree replaced with "Sakura" and the title "Honcho." The contents are also a collection of stories about trials. Some of the stories are based on "Itakura Seiyo" and other works, but the stories reveal the subtleties of human feelings through trials, bringing to light the social conditions of the time.
