A city in northeastern Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies an alluvial plain on the south bank of the Tone River. The city center was once a castle town in the late Middle Ages, but developed as a market town in the early modern period. It is served by the Chichibu Railway, the Tobu Isesaki Line, and the Tohoku Expressway. It was known for manufacturing school uniforms, work clothes, and other clothing, but since the construction of an industrial complex in the 1970s, its main products have been electrical equipment, transportation equipment, and general machinery.
