Printmaker. Born in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. In 1913 (Taisho 2), he decided to become a painter after attending a Western-style painting workshop taught by Ishii Hakutei. The following year, he moved to Tokyo, where, through Hakutei's introduction, he studied engraving under Igami Bonkotsu (1875-1933). In 1941, he exhibited woodblock prints at the Nikaten Exhibition, and watercolors and oil paintings in the Western-style painting section of the Inten Exhibition. In 1941, he became a member of the Japan Creative Print Association, and in 1951, he became a fellow member of the Western-style painting section of the Kokuga Creative Association. When the printmaking section was established in 1956 (Showa 6), he became the person in charge of it. At the same time, he was sympathetic to the peasant art movement that Yamamoto Kanae started in the Ueda area of Nagano Prefecture in 1924, and took charge of workshops at the Rural Art Institute, published "Printmaking Techniques" in 1952, and held woodblock printing workshops in various places. In 1960, he was put in charge of woodblock printing at the newly established printmaking class at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Known for his expressionistic style using only black ink, he traveled to the United States in 1987 (Showa 37) and lived in Washington, completing his "Nudes in Many Forms" and "Nude in the Mirror" series and holding many solo exhibitions across the country. In 1977, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Third Class. He returned to Japan in 1995 (Heisei 7) at the age of 100. In 1991, the Hiratsuka Unichi Print Museum opened in Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture.
