Toga virilis (English spelling)

...Women also wore togas in the early period, but later only prostitutes and others who were not allowed to wear formal dress (stola) wore them. There were the plain, undyed toga virilis for adult men, the scarlet-edged toga praetexta for high-ranking officials and minors, the bleached toga candida for candidates for office, the dark gray toga pulla for mourning, and the scarlet-embroidered toga picta for triumphant generals. The toga was the formal dress for official occasions until the late Imperial period, but because it was heavy and difficult to pleat, the Greek-style outerwear (pallium) gradually came to be preferred.
