Rhodohypoxis - Rhodohypoxis

Japanese:
Rhodohypoxis - Rhodohypoxis

A bulbous plant of the Amaryllidaceae (APG classification: Amaryllidaceae) planted in autumn. The basal leaves are long and slender, 5-10 cm long, and grow in clusters. In May and June, thin flower stalks about 7 cm long grow one after another, and at the top of the stalks bloom star-shaped flowers about 2 cm in diameter. The tepals are pale pink and lanceolate, with the three outer tepals slightly larger than the three inner tepals. The stamens and pistils are so small that they are almost invisible. The leaves wither and go dormant in winter, but new leaves appear in April. Native to South Africa. The horticultural variety sold under the name Attu-zakura is potted and forced to grow, and comes in a wide variety of flower colors, including white, peach, and deep red.

It is somewhat sensitive to cold, but if frost is prevented, it will overwinter outdoors. Potted plants can be placed in a frame or greenhouse, or left in the pot to overwinter in a dry place that does not freeze. Reproduction is by bulb division.
