Italian novelist and critic. His real name was Kurt Erich Suckert. A precocious political boy, he volunteered for World War I at a young age. In 1922, he participated in the Fascist March on Rome, and thereafter, as one of the intellectuals representing the left wing of Fascism, he played an important role in the literary and journalistic world between the two world wars, founding the magazine Novecento (1926) and serving as editor-in-chief of the magazines Fiera Letteraria and Stampa. However, he was arrested and exiled due to his writings, including The Art of the Coup (French version 1931), which caused controversy as a book attacking Hitler. Malaparte was known for his prolific output, and his two most famous works are considered to be his masterpieces: the reportage novel Caputo (1944), a brutally written account of the experiences he gained while traveling around the front lines of Europe during World War II, and Skin (1949), a vivid portrayal of Naples under Allied control.
