…In the Comuneros Revolt (1519-21), the city rebelled against Charles I and was defeated, but in the War of Spanish Succession in the early 18th century, it supported Philip V and joined the Castilian camp. The suburb of Arapiles is famous as the place where, on July 22, 1812, the British-Spanish allied forces under General Wellington defeated the French forces under General Marmont, deciding the course of the Spanish War of Independence. In the Spanish Civil War that broke out in 1936, Franco sided with the rebels from the start and set up his headquarters here, and even when the new government was established in Burgos, the regional ministries and agencies were not moved. …
