〘Noun〙① A roughly drawn caricature that was sold around Miidera in Oiwake, Otsu, Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture) during the Edo period. Oiwake-e. Otani-e. Especially an ugly woman . *Miscellaneous haiku, Yanagi Taru-12 (1777) "Otsu-e: Living and Working in Karuizawa" [Glossary]① is said to have been started by Ukiyo Matabei and is said to have begun around the Kanbun era ( 1661-1673 ). The subject matter was originally Buddhist paintings, but gradually it became caricatures, and various painting materials were used, such as demons and blind men, and they became souvenirs for travelers. They have also been used in spells since ancient times, the main ones being: (1 ) Gehou Daikoku (for long life and good health, and for curing children's dislike of eating cereals ), (2) Raijin (for warding off lightning), (3) Falconer (for bountiful harvests), (4) Fujimusume (for finding a good partner), (5) Zatō (for not falling down), (6) Oni no Nembutsu (for curing crying at night), (7) Hyotan Namazu ( for warding off drowning), (8) Yarimochi Yakko ( for safety on the road), (9) Benkei (for warding off fire), and (10) Yanotsune (for warding off demons).

〘名〙① 江戸時代、近江国(滋賀県)大津の追分、三井寺辺で売り出した、あらく走り書きした戯画。追分絵。大谷絵。土佐絵。※曲水宛芭蕉書簡‐元祿四年(1691)正月五日「三日口を閉ぢて題正月四日 大津絵の筆のはじめは何仏」② 大津絵に描かれた人物を所作事化した舞踊。長唄の藤娘、清元の奴(やっこ)。長唄と清元と掛け合いの座頭などが現存している。③ 「おおつえぶし(大津絵節)」の略。※幇間(1911)〈谷崎潤一郎〉「都都逸(どどいつ)・三下がり・大津絵などを、粋(いき)な節廻しで歌はれると」④ 醜い人物。特に醜婦(しゅうふ)。※雑俳・柳多留‐一二(1777)「大津絵の生きてはたらく軽井沢」[語誌]①は浮世又兵衛に始まると伝えられ、寛文頃(一六六一‐七三)から始まったといわれる。画題は、初めは仏画であったが、次第に戯画となり、鬼、座頭など種々の画材を用い、旅人の土産となった。また、昔から「まじない」に用いられ、その主なものは、(1)外法(げほう)大黒(無病長寿、小児の月代(さかやき)きらいを直す)、(2)雷(雷除け)、(3)鷹匠(五穀成就)、(4)藤娘(良縁)、(5)座頭(倒れない)、(6)鬼の念仏(夜泣きを直す)、(7)瓢箪鯰(ひょうたんなまず)(=水難除け)、(8)槍持奴(やりもちやっこ)(=道中安全)、(9)弁慶(火難除け)、(10)矢の根男(悪魔退治)など。
