A town in Kikuchi County in northern Kumamoto Prefecture. It straddles the lowlands of Shirakawa and the western slope of Mt. Aso's outer rim. The main settlement is a former post town on the Bungo Highway (National Route 57), and the Hohi Main Line passes through it. In addition to agriculture, the town also has industries such as sake brewing, motorcycles, lumber, sewing, and casting.
