A town in Kikuchi County in northern Kumamoto Prefecture. It straddles the lowlands of Shirakawa and the western slope of Mt. Aso's outer rim. The main settlement is a former post town on the Bungo Highway (National Route 57), and the Hohi Main Line passes through it. In addition to agriculture, the town also has industries such as sake brewing, motorcycles, lumber, sewing, and casting. 熊本県北部，菊池郡の町。白川の低地と阿蘇外輪山西斜面にまたがる。主集落は豊後(ぶんご)街道（国道57号線）の旧宿場町で，豊肥本線が通じる。農業を営むほか，酒造，オートバイ，製材，縫製，鋳物などの工業も行う。阿蘇北向谷原生林（天然記念物）がある。99.10km2。３万1234人（2010）。
