These stars have a clearly higher carbon content than normal stars. Their spectra are R-type and N-type. The majority are low-temperature red giants, but a small number of high-temperature ones have also been discovered. This indicates that the cores of red giants have the conditions to easily produce carbon, and is of interest in relation to the origin of chemical elements.
