A mineral belonging to the alkali pyroxenes, also called aegirite or aegirine. Its chemical composition is NaFe 3+ Si 2 O 6 , which is a calcium pyroxene Ca(Mg,Fe 2+ )Si 2 O 6 in which the Ca has been replaced by Na and the (Mg,Fe 2+ ) by Fe 3+ . Acmite with the same composition and crystal structure but a different crystal habit is called acmite. It has dark green to black columnar or granular crystals, sometimes with pyramidal tips. Monoclinic threads. Mohs hardness 6, specific gravity 3.5-3.6. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
