A popular song from the end of the Edo period. At Osaka Pass, which connects Otsu and Kyoto, there were many shops selling Otsu-e paintings. The Otsu Oiwake Dance (included in Matsu no Ochiba) from the early 1700s was inspired by this. However, the song that has been passed down to the present day is the melody that was popular from the Kaei period (1848-1854) to the Meiji period, and the most well-known is "Evacuate Osaka," which tells the story of Umekawa Chubei. Many parodies were created in various places, and they give us a glimpse into the state of the times and human feelings, such as the reaction of the people when Perry arrived, the works of intellectuals at the end of the Edo period, and the changes in living conditions due to the opening up of society. In the Meiji period, it was also sung frequently at comedy halls. [Yoshihiro Kurata] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
