...The Landgrave of Hesse became an elector in 1803 (Hesse-Kassel was later called Kurhessen), and after the revolution of 1830, a constitution was promulgated in 1831, but there were still conflicts between the reactionary monarch, government, and people, which continued until the country was annexed by Prussia in 1866. On the other hand, Hesse-Darmstadt was not a particularly notable country, except for the literary salons of Landgrave's wife Henriette Karoline Christiane (1721-74) at the end of the 18th century. However, during the Napoleonic era, Hesse-Darmstadt became a grand duchy in 1806, greatly expanding its territory as part of the Confederation of the Rhine, and raising its status by promulgating a constitution in 1820. In the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, it sided with Austria, but unlike Kurhessen, it was spared annihilation, and became a constituent state of the German Empire through the North German Confederation (only the area north of the Main River joined). …
