Also called a historical drama. A drama based on historical events or people. Those based on records such as chronicles of the rise and fall of a country at a certain time are sometimes called chronicle (history) plays. In British theatre before Shakespeare, there were many chronicle plays that listed events episodically, but Shakespeare wrote excellent historical plays with sharp character descriptions, taking R. Holinshed's Annals and Plutarch's Lives as his subjects. Kabuki plays about courts and historical events are too absurd to be called history, but Ichikawa Danjūrō IX's live-action plays were essentially no more than chronicle plays. Japanese historical plays were established by Tsubouchi Shōyō, Okamoto Kidō, Mayama Seika and others. 史劇ともいう。歴史上の事件や人物を題材とした劇。一国のある時代の消長の年代記などの記録に基づいて描いたものは,年代記史劇または編年史劇 chronicle (history) playと呼ばれることもある。シェークスピア以前のイギリス演劇では,事件を挿話的に羅列した年代記史劇が多いが,シェークスピアは R.ホリンシェッドの『年代記』や『プルターク英雄伝』に題材を取りながら,鋭い性格描写によってすぐれた歴史劇を書いた。歌舞伎の王朝物や時代物は内容があまりにも荒唐無稽で歴史とはいいがたいが,9世市川団十郎の活歴物も本質的には年代記史劇の域を出なかった。日本の歴史劇は,坪内逍遙,岡本綺堂,真山青果らによって確立された。
