Historical drama

Japanese:
Historical drama
Also called a historical drama. A drama based on historical events or people. Those based on records such as chronicles of the rise and fall of a country at a certain time are sometimes called chronicle (history) plays. In British theatre before Shakespeare, there were many chronicle plays that listed events episodically, but Shakespeare wrote excellent historical plays with sharp character descriptions, taking R. Holinshed's Annals and Plutarch's Lives as his subjects. Kabuki plays about courts and historical events are too absurd to be called history, but Ichikawa Danjūrō IX's live-action plays were essentially no more than chronicle plays. Japanese historical plays were established by Tsubouchi Shōyō, Okamoto Kidō, Mayama Seika and others.
