...Bonifacio was assigned territory in Asia Minor, but he requested that it be exchanged for European territory, which was granted. After overcoming the resistance of the remaining Greek nobles, he established a domain centered on Thessaloniki (after 1209, a "kingdom"). He also led the conquest of central and southern Greece, eliminating or forcing the local Greek nobles to submit, and established the Principality of Athens and the Grand Duchy of Achaea. After Baudouin I was defeated and captured by the Bulgarian Emperor Kalojan at the Battle of Adrianople in 1205, his successor, Henry I, consolidated his control over Thrace and in Asia Minor he fought against the Greek Emperor Theodore I (Lascaris) of the Nicaean Empire, expanding his territory and increasing the power of his country. After Henry's death, his sister Yolande's husband, Pierre de Courtenay, was captured by the Greek Emperor Theodore I of the Epirus in the Albanian mountains on his way to Constantinople from the west (1217). Under his son Robert de Courtenay (ruled 1221-28) and his brother Baudouin II (ruled 1228-61), both of whom were young emperors, the Latin Empire rapidly declined, losing its territories in Asia Minor, as well as Lesbos, Chios, and Samos to the Nicaean Empire, and in Thrace, the Nicaean Empire and the Epirus Empire restricted their control to the area around Constantinople.
