Guillén, Nicolás
Born: July 10, 1902 in Camaguey
[Died] July 16, 1989. A Cuban poet from Havana. He was of black descent. During the Cuban cultural movement after independence, he published Motivos de son (1930) and Songoro Cosongo (1934), becoming a standard-bearer not only in Cuba but also in Negritude literature. These poems, which make extensive use of black idioms, onomatopoeia, and metaphors, and are full of rhythm and simple emotion, denounce the tragic reality of the oppressed people, with the richness of African black tradition and the unique world of Cuban blacks. West Indies, Ltd. (1934) is even more denounced and full of militant conviction. In 1937, he joined the Communist Party, participated in the International Anti-Fascist Cultural Defense Conference in Spain, where he witnessed the civil war, and published Cantos para soldados y sones para turistas (1937). He later traveled to Europe and Latin America as a journalist. After the Cuban Revolution, he served as president of the Union of Writers and Artists, and worked as a defender of the revolution and culture, and as a creator of new culture. His other works include Elegías (1958) and El gran zoo (1967).
