…JS Bach's work (BWV244) is especially famous and is considered to be the pinnacle of Protestant church music. It was composed based on a libretto by Picander (real name Christian Friedrich Henrici, 1700-64), which is based on chapters 26-27 of the Gospel of Matthew and features Lutheran hymns (chorales) and lyrical religious poetry. It premiered on Good Friday, April 15, 1729 (some say April 11, 1727), at the Thomas Church in Leipzig.
