Born: October 30, 1873. Pallas Died: February 22, 1913, Mexico City. Leader of the Mexican Revolution. President (in office 1911-13). Educated in agriculture and business in Paris, France and California, he believed in democracy and spiritism. In 1910, he ran for president against dictator P. Diaz, was arrested on suspicion of rebellion, and fled to Texas, where he led an armed rebellion. He was elected president in 1911, but compromised with the military, bureaucracy, and the large landowning class, and lost the support of the peasant masses, including E. Zapata, who had rebelled to demand land reform. He was arrested in a counter-revolutionary coup by the military in 1913, and was assassinated during his transport.
