A city in the southwest of Coahuila state in northern Mexico. It is the largest city in the state, located about 550 km north of Guadalajara, in the central Mexican plateau, overlooking the Nasus River. On the opposite bank is the town of Gómez Palacio in Durango state. It was founded in 1893, and began to develop as the center of an irrigated agricultural area called the Laguna region after it was established in 1936. Currently, it collects and processes cotton, wheat, livestock, dairy products, etc. produced in the region, and has a steelworks, making it an important industrial city in northern Mexico. It is also a mining center, with mines of silver, zinc, copper, lead, etc. nearby. It is a transportation hub located almost halfway between Ciudad Juarez, a town on the border with the United States, and Mexico City, and is a junction of major roads and railways. Population: 459,809 (1990 estimate).

メキシコ北部，コアウイラ州南西部の都市。同州最大の都市で，グアダラハラの北約 550km，メキシコ高原中部にあり，ナサス川にのぞむ。対岸にはドゥランゴ州の町ゴメスパラシオがある。 1893年建設され，1936年ラグナ地区と呼ばれる灌漑農業地帯が設置されてから，その中心地として発展しはじめた。現在同地区に産する綿花，小麦，家畜，乳製品などを集散，加工するほか，製鉄業が立地し，メキシコ北部の重要な工業都市となっている。また鉱業中心地でもあり，近くに銀，亜鉛，銅，鉛などの鉱山がある。アメリカ合衆国との国境の町シウダードフアレスとメキシコ市のほぼ中間にある交通の要地で，幹線道路，鉄道の分岐点となっている。人口 45万 9809 (1990推計) 。
