A temple of the Tenryuji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism in Keihoku-cho, Kitakuwada-gun, Kyoto Prefecture. It is called Daiyuzan and commonly known as Joshoko-ji Temple. It was founded by the retired Emperor Kogon. Amid the complicated political situation during the civil war between the Northern and Southern Courts, Emperor Kogon, the first emperor of the Northern Court, was toyed with by a strange fate. In 1352 (Shohei 7, Bunwa 1) he became a monk and took the name Katsumitsu Munen Osho while in the temporary palace of the Southern Court Emperor Go-Murakami, who had been captured. A few years later, the retired emperor was pardoned and returned to Kyoto, where he studied under Muso Kokushi, and soon set out on a pilgrimage around the country accompanied by one attendant monk. He entered Tanbayama Kokusho, established a temple, and decided to make it his home. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
