Heimskringla (English spelling)

Japanese: ヘイムスクリングラ（英語表記）Heimskringla

A saga written by Snorri Sturluson around 1230. It covers the history of the Norwegian dynasties from the earliest legends to 1177. The name Heimskringla means "circle of the world" and is taken from the opening words of the manuscript. It is a long work, and is one of the best historical records written in the vernacular language in medieval Europe in terms of both quality and quantity. It details three stages in the history of Scandinavia: (1) the beliefs, life, and culture of the North Germanic people in the pagan era, (2) the changes that occurred during their conversion to Christianity, and (3) their progress after conversion. It is an endlessly fascinating resource for learning about this turbulent period in Scandinavia.
