〘Noun〙 Buddhist term. ① (Abbreviation of "san'eippatsu (three robes and one bowl)") The three types of robes (kesaya) and tableware (iron bowl) worn by monks. Having these in order was an important condition for becoming a monk and receiving the ordination. It can also refer to all of a monk's belongings and tools. Ihatsu. Ehachi. ※Konjaku (around 1120), Volume 7 "He threw away his robes and bowl , copied out the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, and offered it to the monk with all his heart as an offering." ※Rakuyoshu (1598), "robes and bowls, ehatsu, ehachi" [Shibun Vinaya - 34] ② (From the fact that he gave robes and bowls as proof of passing on the law) Dharma, doctrine, or secret doctrine. By extension, the secret doctrine of learning, arts, etc. passed on from master to disciple. Ihatsu. Ehachi. → Inherit the robes and bowls (ihatsu). ※Kyogyoshinsho (1224), 6: "If one steals one 's clothes and bowl, and steals one of the various resources, then this person will destroy the true reward body of all the Buddhas of the three ages." [Nippo Jisho (1603-04)] [Additional Note] E is the Go-on pronunciation of "clothes." It refers to the three clothes and bowl, but in the "Konjaku Monogatarishu," in addition to the example in ①, there are other expressions such as "throwing away the clothes and bowl" and "throwing away the clothes and bowl" that metaphorically express throwing away everything.

〘名〙 三衣と一鉢。また、法を継ぐ証拠として師僧から伝える袈裟(けさ)と鉢。転じて、師から弟子に伝える学問や技芸などの奥義。えはつ。いはち。※江戸から東京へ(1921)〈矢田挿雲〉七「後ち三代豊国の門に入り国周の雅名を貰ひ師の衣鉢(イハツ)を伝へ世間から明治の豊国と謳はれた」
