Yoshino Shrine

Japanese:
Yoshino Shrine

An ancient villa located along the Yoshino River. The Nihon Shoki, in the entry for the second year of the reign of Emperor Saimei, records that "Yoshino Palace was built," and since then, Emperors Tenmu, Jito, Mommu, Gensho, and Shomu have frequently visited this villa. Empress Jito made the most frequent visits to Yoshino, making 33 visits according to the official history records. In order to maintain the villa, the Yoshino Inspectorate was established in the first half of the Nara period. The Nihon Shoki has had long-standing records of Yoshino Palace, appearing in the entries for the 19th year of Emperor Ojin's reign, the 2nd year of Emperor Yuryaku's reign, and the 4th year of the reign. It is known that the Wa kings had a special interest in this land since ancient times. Excavations conducted over many years at Miyataki in Yoshino Town upstream of the Yoshino River have uncovered remains of post-hole buildings, stone paving, and a garden pond from the Asuka to Nara periods on a river terrace, and the Miyataki ruins are thought to be the remains of Yoshino Palace.
