He designed many Gothic buildings, including St. George's Cathedral, Birmingham (1819-22) and the New Court, St. John's College, Cambridge (26-31). His major work, An Attempt to Discriminate the Styles of Architecture in England (17), introduced the terms Early English, Decorated, and Perpendicular, which are still in use today, and was the first to provide a classification of English Gothic styles.
