A city in the southwestern tip of Hiroshima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center, which runs along the Oze (Kino) River on the border with Yamaguchi Prefecture and is on the Sanyo Main Line, has been a center of Japanese paper manufacturing since the feudal era, and was also a ferry settlement on the Sanyo Road. A chemical fiber factory was established in 1934, and a petrochemical complex was established around 1958. Together with the neighboring city of Iwakuni, it formed a coastal industrial zone and developed rapidly. The Yasaka Dam upstream of the Oze River, completed in 1990, is one of the largest in the Chugoku region and a source of industrial water. It is the number one producer of medical gloves in the country. The Sanyo Expressway runs through the city. 78.66 km2 . Population 28,836 (2010). 広島県南西端の市。1954年市制。山口県境の小瀬(木野)川に沿い山陽本線が通じる中心市街は藩政時代以来,和紙の製造が発達,山陽道の渡船集落でもあった。1934年に化学繊維工場が設けられ,1958年ごろから石油化学コンビナートが立地,隣接の岩国市とともに臨海工業地帯を形成して急速に発展。1990年に完成した小瀬川上流の弥栄(やさか)ダムは,中国地方最大級で工業用水の供給源。医療用手袋の生産は全国一。山陽自動車道が通じる。78.66km2。2万8836人(2010)。
